JCB's Sales Manager, Peter Meade, has handed over the keys to a suite of new electric machines for the National Construction Training Campus at Mount Lucas. The equipment, received by Centre Manager John Kelly, will allow learners to work directly with technologies that are shaping a lower‑carbon construction industry.
The arrival of the battery-powered machines reflects the rising demand for green skills. As the sector evolves, trainees and professionals alike need familiarity with modern equipment and processes designed to boost efficiency and cut environmental impact. Bringing these tools into the training ground means learners can build practical skills on technology now being adopted across live sites.
Mount Lucas plays a central role in upskilling Ireland’s construction workforce. LOETB has pioneered Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and green construction training at the campus, which also hosts the National Demonstration Park for MMC to support innovation and knowledge‑sharing across the industry. The new JCB machines further strengthen Mount Lucas’s standing as a Centre of Excellence in construction innovation and training.
John Kelly, Centre Manager, National Construction Training Campus, said: "We are delighted to further strengthen our Construction Machinery fleet with the addition of a number of new electric machines from JCB. This investment through the Sustainable Equipment Grant (SEG) reflects our commitment to providing trainees with access to the latest technology and equipment that is increasingly being adopted across the construction industry.
"As the sector continues its transition towards more sustainable methods of operation, it is essential that our learners gain hands-on experience with low-emission and zero-emission plant. These new JCB electric machines will enhance the quality of training delivered at Mount Lucas and ensure that apprentices, operators and industry personnel are equipped with the skills required for the future construction workforce."
The investment aligns with LOETB's Climate Action Roadmap. LOETB is working to reduce emissions, improve efficiency and embed sustainability across the organisation. The new vehicles support decarbonising the fleet in line with SI 381/2021 (Clean Vehicles Directive) and contribute to the public‑sector target of a 51% cut in energy‑related greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. LOETB’s climate action also focuses on preparing learners and communities for the changing world of work.
The initiative advances several UN Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing industry‑relevant training and access to new technologies; SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy); SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through workforce modernisation; SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) via lower‑emission technologies; and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by supporting the transition to a lower‑carbon economy. LOETB’s designation as an SDG Champion underscores this commitment, with Mount Lucas recognised for its contribution to climate action, energy efficiency and green skills.
