Uisce Éireann is set to start upgrading the public wastewater network in the Raheen area of Athenry in the coming weeks, as part of plans to support the town's continued growth. The project will install a 500-metre sewer main extension and add new service connections to increase capacity for current and future residential and commercial needs in the Galway town.
Sinead Kennedy, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, said: "These works will provide an improved wastewater service for homes and businesses in the Raheen area of Athenry.
"The sewer main extension and associated new connections will allow more customers to be connected to the public wastewater network, providing a more reliable wastewater service for customers while also safeguarding the local environment."
To facilitate the works safely, Galway County Council has granted a road closure licence. The L3101 will be shut for six weeks between the Gort Mhaoilir junction and the Raheen roundabout, with a signed diversion in place via Ballydavid South, the L3105 and Gort Mhaoilir.
"We want to thank the local community and road-users in advance for their understanding while works are underway," Sinead continued. "We appreciate that road closures can be an inconvenience but, in this case, it is essential to ensure that works are carried out as safely and efficiently as possible for our crews, road-users and the general public."
Farrans Construction will deliver the scheme on behalf of Uisce Éireann. Work is due to begin this week and is expected to take around 10 weeks to complete in total.
