Gormley Signs Order To Protect Tara Monument

Minister for Environment John Gormley has signed a temporary preservation order for the national monument in Tara Valley, Co Meath.

Mr Gormley ordered an assessment over reports by opponents to the planned M3 route, that work had damaged the Rath Lugh fort, which lies nearby.

The order was signed after a recommendation was made to the Minister by archaeologist Conor Newman. Further construction work taking place on or near the site has been halted for the present.

The TaraWatch group has welcomed the move, who have strongly campaigned against the M3 construction, citing the damage it would cause to the fort and the nearby national monument at Lismullen.
