Two voluntary hospitals in Cork are due to amalgamate to develop a new multi-million hospital on a green field site, it has been announced.
The Mercy Hospital University Hospital and the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital made the announcement in a joint statement, which said they wish to build a new hospital which will cater for over 200,000 patients annually.
It is estimated that it will cost €500 million and proposals from developers aimed at identifying the most suitable site.
Various funding options have also been considered for the project, from the State and co-funding initiatives with commercial developers.
