The N7 Naas Road widening scheme has become the first construction project in the Republic of Ireland to gain a Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment and Award (CEEQUAL).
The Naas Road Widening and Interchanges scheme consisted of an upgrade of a 14km length of the existing N7 between Rathcoole and Naas. The road was widened from a two-lane dual carriageway to a three-lane dual carriageway to effective environmental management.
The client, designer and contractor partnership used the CEEQUAL assessment scheme to demonstrate the high level of environmental performance achieved during the planning, design and construction phases of the project.
The project received the award for a 'Very Good' environmental performance, which demonstrated commitment to effective environmental management.
A rigorous points-scoring based assessment was used, which is applicable to any civil engineering project and includes environmental aspects such as the use of water, energy and land as well as ecology, landscape, nuisance to neighbours, archaeology, waste minimisation and management.
