Alan Shannon, Permanent Secretary at the Department for Social Development, has given the opening address to delegates at the Annual Conference of the Northern Ireland Federation of Housing Associations (NIFHA).
Mr Shannon acknowledged the value of such conferences bringing together key players in the housing field and providing the opportunity to keep abreast of developing policies.
He paid tribute to the hard work and dedication of all in the housing field saying that: "The Minister has had the privilege of visiting a number of housing projects and developments right across Northern Ireland to see at first hand how housing services are delivered.
"Provision of a good stable home is central to tackling social exclusion and a wide range of complex problems, such as, unemployment, poor health, low income, educational attainment, deprived neighbourhoods, crime and anti-social behaviour. Much has been achieved. But there are real challenges ahead."
NIFHA is the representative body for Housing Associations and the point of contact for statutory agencies for consultation on matters concerning the voluntary housing movement. Membership is not restricted to associations registered with the Department for Social Development. Unregistered associations may affiliate and other bodies or individuals may also be granted membership.
