Road works totaling £2.5 million in the Magherafelt District Council area are progressing well.

Regional Development Minister, Conor Murphy said: "Phase one of the road realignment scheme on the A54 at Ballymacombs Road near Smithstown Crossroads, Bellaghy, is substantially complete. This phase involves filling the area in advance of the main works in order to induce settlement in what are relatively poor ground conditions. Other schemes completed in the current year to date include footways at Ballynease Road and Culbane Road, Portglenone; Knockagin Road, Desertmartin; and Annaghmore Road, Castledawson."

Roads Service's Western Division Manager, Pat Doherty, welcomed the level of investment in local transport and safety measures in the Magherafelt District Council area. Other schemes in this year's programme include provision of a footway at Craigadick Road, Maghera, and traffic calming schemes at Gulladuff and at Blackpark Road, Creagh. Provision of Safer Routes to Schools projects at Ampertaine Primary School, Upperlands, and St John's Primary School, Swatragh, are also planned.
