Mayor Urged To Improve Transport Links To Belfast International Airport

The CEO of easyjet has urged the Mayor of Belfast to upgrade transport links to Aldergrove.

During a visit to Belfast International Airport, CEO Andy Harrison called for investment in roads and public transport: "If I was the Lord Mayor of Belfast I think I would be directing all investment to Belfast International and ensuring that the city has one really good airport, the approach taken by most other cities in Europe.

"The sensible thing would be to invest in better ground links to Belfast International, the airport which is best placed for growth in the next few years."

A spokesman for Belfast City Council said it would be inappropriate for the Mayor to comment as this would be a matter for the Department for Regional Development (DRD).

The DRD would need over £35m to upgrade the Lisburn to Antrim railway line which passes the airport's perimeter fence.

However Belfast International has produced a 25-year plan which includes a new dual carriageway link from the M2 at Templepatrick.
