Plans to regenerate Limerick's most deprived suburbs must involve full consultation with communities according to the Dáil's Labour Party.

The Government has proposed that the Moyross, Southll and Ballinarcurra Weston estates under go 'radical improvement' as part of a major scheme.

Over 2,000 houses are to be demolished, two new town centres will be created along with new social, educational and policing facilities.

Limerick East Minister Jan O'Sullivan welcomed the plans but warned that for the investments to deliver they need focused on the people not just the physical environment and infrastructure .

Ms O'Sullivan said: "The plans must provide support to families, especially those that are most at risk. In particular it is important that those who drop out of school early are provided with adequate opportunities and are not left in an educational black hole."

The minister added policing must be improved to protect communities from criminal activity.
