Government figures have shown the level of building activity is better than expected given the reductions in house prices throughout the year.
Over 78,000 new houses and apartments were built around Ireland last year.
The majority of the new homes built were in the greater Dublin area, with 17,000 houses and apartments built in the capital and almost 25,000 more in Kildare, Meath and Wicklow.
