Galway Architects Move To Renovated Georgian Building

A newly renovated three-bay four-storey building in Galway will become the new home to creative young architect, Paul Dillon and his team at Paul Dillon Architects.

Paul has converted the interior of the large Georgian house at No. 1 Court House Square which had been altered over time, often carelessly, into a contemporary building with office and residential accommodation, while keeping the elegant exterior.

The building now has three-storeys of stylish office space and the top floor houses a luxury penthouse apartment with enviable views of the city.

With Paul Dillon's business and team of architects expanding, the move to larger office space was inevitable, however the move to offices designed by Paul Dillon, was more ideal.

Paul explained: "We are very excited about the move and it is wonderful to in a position to design, not only our own office space, but the office building. The work has taken eight months to complete, the interior of the old building was completely undistinguished, and there had been so many alterations made, including new partitions, doors, ceilings, none of the original internal features existed.

"We were very careful throughout the renovation process to maintain the character of the building. We have upgraded the existing accommodation to contemporary standards and to current Building Regulations, including a proposed passenger lift which will allow equal physical access to everyone to all levels of the building."

He concluded: "The relocation of the apartment to the top floor allows for dual aspect windows with direct sun light from south facing windows overlooking courthouse square. The large private roof terrace allows views of the salmon weir."

Number One, Courthouse Square, forms part of a terrace of buildings constructed during the period 1820-40 in Galway City.

Together with Lough Corrib House, the Town Hall Theatre and the Courthouse, this small terrace helps to enclose an important civic enclosure.
