Leaked Study Prompts Stormont Quiz

Sports Minister Edwin Poots will field questions from the Stormont committee about proposals for a stadium on the old Maze prison site.

The committee will quiz the Minister about the leaked feasibility study which recommended the Maze as the best location for the mutli-sport stadium.

Stormont Finance Minister Peter Robinson is currently reviewing the report, compiled by consultants from PricewaterhouseCoopers, before passing it on to his Executive colleagues.


The report looked into a range of proposals, including the option of a stadium in north Belfast and the refurbishment of the three existing sport venues.

However, it found the Maze site was the most viable option and said it had the potential to generate significant revenue.

The option of building the stadium in Belfast was ruled out for cost reasons. The report said: "Hypothetically such an option would generate high visitor spending benefits because it is located closer to the city centre, but these are outweighed by the capital and infrastructure costs and the higher value of this site."
