A troubled Co Dublin building firm has been ordered by the High Court to pay contributions of more than €180,000 into a pension fund for workers.

Following a landmark application by the Irish Pensions Board, Ms Justice Laffoy ordered Limestone Construction to pay the owed money to the Construction Workers Pension Scheme and to register the workers with the scheme.

In the first case of its kind, the Pensions Board had applied for an order to compel the construction company to pay the alleged €180,000 they failed to contribute into a pension fund on behalf of almost 200 workers.

The board claimed that although money was deducted from workers' pay between mid-June 2006 to September 2007, the company did not pay the deductions or employers contributions into the fund.

After an investigation the board found the firm had failed to pay contributions to the tune of €186,000.

The builder did not defend the action and has 14 days to comply with the court's order.

However, the board expressed concerns about the company's financial situation. It no longer owns its assets and owes a lot of money to creditors.
