Builders coughed up over €150m to the Revenue Commissioners in 2007, according to a report published today.

The Revenue Commissioners Annual Report revealed it collected €151.4 from the construction sector in tax, interest and penalties in 2007.

The figures show that the construction sector accounted for 18-19% of Revenue's audits in 2007.

A total of 44,000 audits and assurance checks were carried out last year. In the first three months of this year, the Revenue carried out 722 audits and 7,223 checks of builders, collecting €26.9m.

Overall the Revenue collected €734m from 250,000 audits and compliance checks last year, a rise of a third on the checks carried out in 2006.
