The historic Alexander Memorial Cottages in Londonderry are to undergo major improvements - aimed at bringing the homes, built in 1914, to modern day standards.

The House Executive-led scheme will cost £217,000 and take up to eight months to complete. In total, six cottages will be modernised.

Works will include improvements and extensions to kitchens, the upgrading of bathrooms and the installation of gas central heating.

Electrical and plumbing services will also be upgraded along with a range of internal and external repairs and general maintenance.

Commenting on the start of the scheme, District Manager Sam McPherson said: "This scheme is part of the Housing Executive's strategic approach to modernise its older stock, ensuring that our tenants have good quality and modern homes.

"Given the extent and nature of the work tenant consultation is a key factor during the planning stages and throughout the scheme.

"The particular needs of individual tenants have been taken into account not only in relation to the work to their homes but also in sorting out the temporary housing arrangements."

Madeline Hasson, one of the tenants from Alexander Cottages who has moved out of her home while the work is underway.

She said: "I have lived at Alexander Cottages for almost 20 years and I love living here and my relatives are close by. I am really looking forward to moving back in as soon as the work is completed."

The contractor is McGuigan Construction Ltd and the scheme is likely to be completed by next spring.
