McMullan Scoops £6m Obel Walling Contract

Construction News Image
Curtain walling on one of Belfast's tallest developments is to be completed by Moira firm McMullan Architectural, it has been revealed.

The £50m Obel Tower project will incorporate prefabricated curtain walling, believed to be a construction first for Northern Ireland.

McMullan has most recently supplied unitised curtain walls at the BBC's new Manchester headquarters.

Managing Director Ted McMullen said: "As a company we have been involved in many large developments but to be providing unitised curtain walling for the first time within Northern Ireland highlights the level of innovation and specialism that McMullen can deliver both domestically and in the global construction market."

Obel Tower will loom 28-stories over Belfast city centre, encompassing 183 luxury dwellings, as well as a hotel and office space.

McMullan's contract is estimated to be worth £6m.

The firm's boss said: "This is a very exciting project for McMullen Architectural Systems to be involved in.

"The Obel Tower will be a symbol of the further regeneration of the Laganside area and Belfast in general and we are delighted to be working on what will undoubtedly become a major Northern Ireland landmark," added Mr McMullen.

The main building scheme is being undertaken by a sub-group of Newry-based Carnbane House Group, O'Hare and McGovern.

Construction work is scheduled for completion by summer 2010.

O'Hare and McGovern Eamon Managing Director O'Hare said: "With over 30 years' experience of landmark infrastructure projects O'Hare and McGovern have the necessary skills to complete the development on time and within budget.

"We are delighted to be working with McMullen Architectural Systems as we are confident that they will provide a superb level of service."

Established in 1971, McMullen Architectural Systems soon placed itself as a specialist within the construction industry, on a global scale.

The firm employs over 350 staff, and runs its headquarters from Northern Ireland.

McMullan also operates in the Republic, England, Scotland, Poland and the USA.

Having doubled turnover since 2006 to £50m, the firm, supported by a 'strong order book', is expected to hit £70m turnover by 2010.
