The Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) has been shortlisted as the Sustainable Social Housing Landlord of the Year in the first UK Sustainable Housing Awards.

NIHE was nominated for its work in promoting energy efficiency, and developing innovative energy saving measures in its provision of social housing.

The Executive recently installed 2,000 solar water heating systems and converted 80% of our houses from coal to more efficient natural gas or oil heating.

As part of a pilot project NIHE also installed a range of innovative heating systems including solar ventilation panels; PV panels to generate electricity; combined heat and electricity units; ground source heat pump; solar roof tiles (heating and electricity); wind turbine; and wood pellet systems.

NIHE homes are now deemed more energy efficient than homes in private sector.

The current SAP rating for Housing Executive houses is now at 60 points, up from 39 in 1996 and five points higher than houses in private ownership.

SAP is the national standard for calculating the energy performance of buildings on a scale of one to 100.

Ted Stevens, Inside Housing's events director and the organiser of the awards, said "We've had a terrific response and the Housing Executive has done brilliantly to get shortlisted from such a huge field.

"Britain is leading the way on sustainable housing and innovative building techniques so we’re delighted we’re able to organise a ceremony to reward that organisations that are delivering best practice."

More than 130 entries were received for the awards, which is organised by Inside Housing magazine.

The 2008 UK Sustainable Housing Awards will be presented at a special 'eco' awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in London’s Park Lane on Tuesday 11 November.

The sponsors of the awards include Wates Living Space, EPS Social Housing, Civica, Axis and the NHBC.
