Businesses Help Homeless Centre Refurb Project

Construction News Image
Volunteers from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive's Direct Labour Organisation (DLO) have taken part in a one day refurbishment project at a west Belfast homeless centre, as part of Business in the Community's Business Challenge.

The 14 strong team carried out extensive repairs to the Welcome Centre, off the Falls Road.

The work included fixing a leaking roof, cleaning and repairing guttering and replastering walls. They also helped put up shelves and even built a table for the nurse.

The Welcome Centre, which provides assistance to vulnerable rough sleepers in Belfast, has been operating for 15 years and started as a soup kitchen for the homeless.

Over the years it has grown and expanded to provide much needed services for many people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness, those that are sleeping rough, and those in need of various support services.

Sandra Moore, Director of Homelessness Services, at the Welcome organisation, said: "The Welcome Organisation is delighted to have volunteers from the Housing Executive’s DLO providing invaluable practical help to us.

"The work will make an immeasurable tangible impact upon our core service operations. As well as making a positive social impact, volunteers will hopefully be provided with an insight into the real world of homelessness and the work of the Welcome Organisation.

"I cannot begin to express the depth of our gratitude to everyone who has helped make it happen."

Martin Howell, Director at Business in the Community Northern Ireland, added: "Well done to the staff from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, who have shown real leadership and commitment to developing staff while making a positive and lasting community impact."
