The Northern Ireland Housing Executive has launched a scheme to install gas heating in 88 homes in the Movilla area of Newtownards.
District Manager Owen Brady said the NIHE was investing over £430,000 through the provision of new heating systems in the area.
"We are replacing open fires, room heaters and electric heating systems with new gas heating.
"The new central heating systems will provide an easy to use, clean and energy efficient way for residents to heat their homes."
Mr Brady said the new systems will lead to reduced heating costs for the tenant and will also reduce maintenance costs for the Housing Executive.
"In addition, air pollution levels will be significantly improved over the old solid fuel appliances," he said.
Ian Cox from the East End Residents Association also welcomed the start of the scheme.
He said: "This is good news for residents in the Movilla area of the East End. The Housing Executive’s investment will improve the quality of life for these residents by providing an efficient and economical way to make their homes more comfortable."
