It has been reported that plans are afoot to remove an historic monument in the town of New Ross to make may for a new road layout and car park.
It is believed the 1798 memorial will be moved to allow for an adjoining traffic island, which will facilitate a roundabout that increase the safety of motorists at the hazardous junction.
Dublin-based traffic consultants, who have drafted up these contentious proposals for the area, have been met with extreme opposition by members of the town council, who held an emergency meeting to discuss the plans.
"Let's not be fooled by this today or any other day," a council spokesperson said.
Council members will met again at the end of the month to debate the issue further.
More details on the plans are expected to be unveiled, including the costing of the removal.
