A Fine Gael election candidate in Meath has put his weight behind calls for a government stimulus to help out of work builders.

Pat O'Brien, who is running for a seat in the Slane/Dunleek ward, said all relevant authorities must act to help unemployed construction professionals, who he says are anxious to get back to work.

"There's plenty of building work to be done and if only the government could find both the courage and the political will to engage in it," said Mr O'Brien.

He claimed opposition politicians have failed on promises to create public building contracts.

"For the past few elections Fianna Fáil have done nothing else but promise to build new schools, new hospitals, new affordable homes for people on long-term waiting lists, new everything, but alas that proved to be nothing but empty political promises, they had no intention of keeping.

"They would be better off getting all those experienced building workers, back to work building those same things we need."

Mr O'Brien slammed the costs of renting prefabs, suggesting investing in new school buildings would be better for the economy, and the nation's workforce.
