Sixteen new homes are to be built in the Elmdale area of Ballyfermot by a charitable housing organisation.

Not-for-profit Habitat for Humanity Ireland said the crisis housing would be its biggest building project in the country to date.

Commenting on the Elmdale scheme, Kevin McGarry, the charity's Executive Director, said during the 'Celtic Tiger' period social housing lists actually increased.

"Habitat for Humanity Ireland is helping families who would otherwise not have the opportunity to own their own home," he said.

The new houses will be constructed in partnership with Dublin City Council, Sisk Contractors and with selected families, volunteers and members of the local community.

EBS will provide affordable mortgages for these homes and costs will be further reduced through volunteer labour and donations.

Even families on an income of €20,000 to €39,000 could be eligible for this project, Habitat For Humanity said.

Each house will have three-bedrooms, front and back gardens, and a car parking space.

Homeowners are selected to partner with Habitat for Humanity Ireland based on select criteria and contribute 500 hours 'Sweat Equity', putting their time into the building of their home.
