Proposals for a £8.5m runway extension at Sligo Airport have been approved by county planners.
The 285-metre project will run over five hectares of reclaimed land at Sligo harbour. Ten conditions were attached to the granted platform extension.
Staff and management at the airport have welcomed the planning approval.
"This is a very important milestone in the provision of a modern and efficient Regional Airport and represents confidence in the procedure that Sligo Airport has followed in order to address compliance issues with the present facility," an airport spokesperson said.
He added that the granting of planning permission is the first step in bringing the project forward.
Without the works being carried out, the licensing of Sligo Airport as a public commercial airport would "without doubt be in jeopardy," the spokesman suggested.
