FF Hits Out Over Ongoing Delay In R336 Galway to Ros a’ Mhíl Road Project

Fianna Fail has hit out over the ongoing delay in the R336 Galway to Ros a’ Mhíl road project.

A preferred route for the scheme has not been chosen and the Minister for Transport Shane Ross has only allocated €20,000 this year towards the scheme.

The money is to be used for an updated appraisal, including the business case, to progress it taking cost and environmental factors into account.

Fianna Fáil TD for Galway West Éamon Ó Cuív said: "I can't understand how after this amount of time, we still don’t have a preferred route chosen. This is having a negative impact on the area, as no planning permissions are being granted in Cois Fharraige along the six corridors while the current six options remain under consideration.

"This entire process is typical of the cavalier attitude of this government towards basic infrastructure in the west of Ireland, and particularly in Gaeltacht areas. It's well known that the current R336 Galway to Ros a’ Mhíl Road is totally inadequate. Not only does it carry large volumes of traffic, it has a substantial number of entrances along it, and it needs to be urgently upgraded.

"The time has come for a preferred route to be chosen and the Minister must allocate the funding to do this immediately. The road should also be constructed in tandem with the proposed city by-pass N6 road, as otherwise, those travelling west to south Connemara, will hit a bottleneck in Barna.

"I am also calling on Minister Ross to consider changing the status of this road from a regional route to a national route, and is could act as an extension of the N6 Dublin to Galway road, allowing access to south Connemara."
