Delays in the public inquiry into the proposed retail development at Sprucefield is halting the creation of 2,000 jobs, an assemblyman has said.

Lagan Valley Sinn Féin MLA Paul Butler said wrangling over the scheme which will be anchored by John Lewis, is unwelcome given the current economic conditions.

"We are currently in the midst of serious recession with many people both in the construction and retail sectors being unemployed," he said.

"Over 2000 job opportunities, both in construction and retail services, would be made available through this development going ahead.

"However this current delay will do nothing to alleviate the jobs crisis."

Mr Butler said a rescheduled date for the public inquiry needs to made available "as soon as possible" in order to push the project forward.
