Repairing roads damaged from ice and flooding over recent weeks could cost in excess of €150m.

Councils in Ireland have called on the Government to provide extra funding to combat this issue, on a per-kilometre basis.

Emergency road repairs are underway across the country following the recent poor weather, with officials saying that certain sections of the M1 are "disintegrating" following the prolonged cold snap.

However, there are fears that cash may have to be taken from road building budgets, unless Transport Minister Noel Dempsey gives the green light for emergency support.
