Schools To Replace Monaghan Barracks

Students will soon be 'falling-in' if detailed plans for a former Irish Army barracks just approved by Monaghan County Council come to fruition.

County Monaghan councillors approved the plans in mid December for the development of an educational facility at the former barracks, Armagh Road, Knockaconny in Monaghan.

The proposed development comprises the change of use of the existing lands from barracks to educational use to include the construction of a new split level two-storey/three-storey

primary school (2,490 square metres), a new three-storey post primary school (3,965square metres), a new part three/part four-storey college of Further Education (7,042square metres), a new two-storey sports hall (1,325 square metres) and a new twostorey/three-storey theatre building (1,583 square metres).

Permission was also granted for a new internal road with set-down area for buses, two ESB substations, ancillary storerooms/electrical rooms (273 square metres) and new boundary treatment facing the Armagh Road (N12), car parking, a ball court, landscaping and associated site works.

The approved plans include a relocated entrance, a new roundabout and associated road works at the junction of the entrance to the IDA Business Park on the N12 as part of a total development area is 16,980 square metres.

Demolition of all the existing buildings on the site including the perimeter wall facing the Armagh Road is included in the plans.

The promoter of the scheme is County Monaghan VEC and the architect is Oppermann Associates.
