Irish Rail has submitted a plan to build a €200m railway line saying it will make the economy €1bn.
The rail company has submitted their business case to the Department of Transport, which says the building of a DART airport link in Dublin would earn up to €1bn.
The document says the €200m line covering a 7km stretch from Clongriffin to Dublin Airport would cater for 9.4m passengers per year. It also says the project would benefit tourism, business and the environment. The projected journey time is estimated at 25 minutes.
Spokesperson for Irish Rail, Barry Kenny, said: "The line could be open by 2016, and be built with very little disruption because it would travel over a greenfield site."
He said Irish Rail expected a decision on whether the plan would go ahead later this year.
