€11m Funding For Dublin Homes Welcomed

Fine Gael Dublin South Central TD, Catherine Byrne, has welcomed the allocation of almost €11 million to Dublin City Council to improve or adapt the homes of older people and people with a disability.

The funding is being made available as part of an overall national allocation of €67.75 million by the Minister for Housing and Planning, Jan O'Sullivan.

"This funding will help to make a real difference to the lives of elderly people or those who have a disability. It's very encouraging that even during such difficult economic circumstances, the Government is prioritising this funding to ensure the homes of those in need can be adapted to make their day to day life easier.

"Supporting independent living within the community is one of the key priorities of the Government’s new Housing Strategy for People with a Disability. It sets out a framework for the delivery of housing to people with disabilities through mainstream housing policy, which will help them continue to live in their own homes rather than having to move into residential care settings.

"A range of grants are available under the scheme; up to €30,000 can be secured for improvement works and extensions to facilitate a person with a disability, with grants of up to €10,500 available for older people who need to have repairs or improvements carried out in their homes. Mobility Aid Grants, of up to €6,000, can be used to install facilities such as stairlifts."
