SDLP MLA Patsy McGlone has welcomed plans by NIE to invest £44 million to facilitate renewable wind generation.
Mr McGlone who is Chair of the Enterprise, Trade and Investment Committee was speaking after the Utility Regulator signalled its intention to approve the investment plans.
"I want to welcome the announcement by the Utility Regulator that they will commit to develop the usage of renewable wind generation which is vital for achieving a long-term alternative source of energy.
"The investment will increase the amount of renewable generation in the north and west of Northern Ireland that can access NIE’S transmission network.
"It is estimated that the network can accommodate 1000 MW of renewable wind generation and could provide 27% of electricity demand in 2020.
"We in Northern Ireland need to make a strong case for investing in green energy such as offshore wind farms in order to bring economic stability to our region.
"This will be vital to drive growth, create jobs throughout decades to come and promote a cleaner form of energy production."
