SDLP MLA for West Tyrone Joe Byrne has reiterated his call for progression of the A5 road in the wake of fatal crashes in recent weeks.
Mr Byrne said: "If anything needs to be highlighted in the New Year period it is the fact the continuing issue of a new A5 road is literally an issue of life and death. Too many people already have lost their lives on Northern Irish roads, with two fatal crashes recently on the A5."
The assemblyman said the scheme must be brought to the forefront of the political picture. He said: "It's all well and good the Transport Minister understands my frustration, but we want action. The overwhelming majority of the public in the West want a 21st century, modern road infrastructure.
"The people of the West do not need hollow words and statements. They need action; determined and dedicated action to ensure the new A5 is delivered which will save lives, creates jobs, boost people's physical and social mobility and be the basis for the rebirth and regeneration of the West."
