Housing Minister Nelson McCausland has launched the new Landlord Registration Scheme.
Minister McCausland said: "The introduction of landlord registration will help make the private rented sector more attractive for more people."
The scheme requires all private landlords who let residential property in Northern Ireland to register. Once registered, landlords will be provided with up to date information and support relating to the private rented sector.
The Scheme will enable Councils to ensure that private landlords adhere to the law already in place.
Tenants will be encouraged to look for the Landlord Registration logo and number when taking up a new tenancy. This will provide reassurance that their landlord has complied with the statutory requirement to register.
