Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has announced the start of work on a £170,000 major resurfacing scheme, on Barrack Street, Strabane is scheduled to begin in July this year.
Improvements on Barrack Street, a main link into the town centre, will take place between its junction at the Bowling Green and extend to its junction at Newtownkennedy Street. The scheme involves resurfacing footways, carriageways, and provision of a Safer Routes to School scheme for both Barrack Street Primary School and St Anne’s Primary School. The work is part of the Neighbourhood Renewal initiative, funded by the Department for Social Development.
Minister Kennedy said: "The scheme will improve the quality of Barrack Street and enhance the safety for all who use this route to access the primary schools, or travel into Strabane town centre."
Due to the restricted carriageway width available on Barrack Street, and to help minimise any potential conflict between the site works and through traffic, it will be necessary to close Barrack Street to through traffic. Diversions will be in place for through traffic. Local access will be retained. The scheme is expected to be completed in August 2014.
