Fianna Fáil has been accused of having "no unconditional commitment" to scrap the water charges by Sinn Féin.

Spokesperson on water Eoin Ó Broin said the last six months the party has flitted between abolition, suspension and abolition again.

He said: "On a number of occasions Fianna Fáil has had an opportunity to place its support for the abolition of water charges on the Dáil record and keep a key pledge of its General Election manifesto. As recently as September this year Fianna Fáil failed to support a Sinn Féin motion calling for the abolition of the charges.

"The question now is not when the next Fianna Fáil u-turn on the charges will occur it's what weak justification for the charges the party will cling to when the so-called expert commission returns its pre-determined recommendations."
