The Department of Infrastructure has selected consultants to develop a scheme for a road widening project in Co L'Derry.
The SDLP, who have been lobbying the department to move on the scheme, said they would be "scrutinising the project closely".
Councillor Brian Tierney said the project has been a priority for motorists and commuters in Derry for years.
He said: "Tailbacks and traffic congestion have been a daily part of life for people using the road for too long.
"SDLP representatives have been pressuring the Department of Infrastructure to move on this project for some time. I'm pleased that our work is now showing results.
"It's critical that local people have power in this process."
