Architectural planning has begun for a PE hall for St Tiernan's Community School in Dundrum, Co Down.

Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton confirmed the news in discussions with Fine Gael Senator Neale Richmond.

Mr Richmond also stated that "site surveys have commenced in advance of preparing the planning application".

This will take up the next stage of the project.

Mr Richmond added: "Unfortunately, the timely delivery of this much needed PE hall is tied to the delivery of the equally much needed provision of a permanent school for Ballinteer Educate Together School in the same site. The delivery of this school is still pending due to a need to resolve future access issues.

"I am continuing to work with the Minister and the local community to resolve this impasse that will allow for the delivery of these key educational facilities in our area."
