Martins Construction has successfully completed major refurbishment works to the Askeaton Swimming Pool and Centre in County Limerick. 

Significant flood protection measures have been implemented as part of the refurbishment works, along with an upgrade of the mechanical and electrical plant. 

These works to the facility, which has been closed since 2023, have been partly funded by the Department of Sport's Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) and Limerick City and County Council.

Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly, said: "We're pleased to see the completion of essential flood relief works at this key piece of infrastructure. I want to thank everyone who has worked hard to bring us to this point, particularly our colleagues in Government whose funding support has enabled it to progress."

Swim Ireland has now been appointed to operate the swimming pool and leisure facility after an agreement was signed yesterday (May 20) following a meeting of stakeholders in Askeaton. 

Swim Ireland will now begin a recruitment process with a view to re-opening the facility in Autumn 2025.

Swim Ireland CEO, Sarah Keane, added: "Swim Ireland is delighted to be partnering with Limerick City and County Council and Askeaton Pool and Leisure DAC to re-open this fantastic facility.

"We look forward to working with clubs, schools, community groups and the people of Askeaton to deliver a vibrant and exciting programme in this great facility that gives everyone an opportunity to swim."

Further updates will be outlined to stakeholders when an exact opening date is made available by Swim Ireland.
