The Antrim and Newtownabbey Labour Market Partnership (LMP) has launched the Cleantech Upskilling Electrical Training Academy in collaboration with ETTNI.
This fully funded initiative is designed to provide qualified local electricians with the technical expertise required to install and maintain renewable energy and low-carbon technologies.
The academy aims to recruit 15 electrical professionals from within the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough. Participants can complete up to three accredited Level 3 qualifications from a suite of specialised courses, including:
• Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Installation & Maintenance
• Electrical Energy Storage Systems (Battery Storage)
• Domestic & Small Commercial Electric Vehicle Charging Installations
Training will be delivered at ETT's Cleantech Training Centre in Ballymena, featuring a blend of classroom-based theory, hands-on practical sessions, and formal assessments.
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick, welcomed the launch: "This fully funded academy demonstrates our commitment to equipping local people with the skills needed for a greener future, while supporting economic growth across the Borough."
The programme arrives as Northern Ireland works towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. By upskilling the existing workforce, the academy intends to help local tradespeople secure new contracts, access promotion opportunities, and support the region's transition to a green economy.
Tina McMullan, ETT Project Lead, added: "This is a fantastic opportunity for local electricians to gain the skills and recognised qualifications needed to move into in the growing renewable energy sector. It's about upskilling the electrical workforce, supporting local businesses, and contributing to Northern Ireland's green economy."
Applications are currently open for qualified electricians residing in the Borough. Candidates interested in these accredited courses can apply by contacting [email protected]. The academy is funded by the Department for Communities through Labour Market Partnerships, which facilitate local employment action plans and regional collaboration.
