Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) has welcomed a substantial allocation of Housing Infrastructure Investment Funding (HIIF), which is set to facilitate the direct construction of approximately 3,800 homes and pave the way for an additional 6,800 residences on critical sites across the region.
The HIIF initiative provides targeted financial support for essential enabling infrastructure, including water services, roads, and utilities. This funding aims to accelerate housing delivery by removing upfront infrastructure bottlenecks and enhancing the overall viability of key development locations.
The nationwide rollout was confirmed today by James Browne TD, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, alongside John Cummins TD, Minister of State for Planning and Local Government, who announced the 82 infrastructure projects selected to receive backing during the first phase of the HIIF scheme.
Following successful applications by LCCC, the confirmed allocations for Limerick-based projects include:
• Mungret Housing – Delivered by LCCC in partnership with the Land Development Agency (LDA). With an indicative cost band of less than €10m, this project will directly unlock 687 housing units and indirectly unlock an additional 1,800 residential units.
• Colbert Quarter SUDS – Delivered by LCCC in partnership with the LDA. Operating within an indicative cost band of over €20m, this initiative will directly unlock 939 housing units and indirectly unlock a further 2,239 residential units.
• Castletroy Link Road – Led by LCCC. With an indicative cost band of €10m to €20m, the project will directly unlock 1,109 housing units and indirectly unlock an additional 122 residential units.
• Toppins Field – Led by LCCC. Positioned within an indicative cost band of less than €10m, this development will directly unlock 550 housing units and indirectly unlock a further 3,699 residential units.
In addition to these council-led projects, the Land Development Agency has secured separate funding within an indicative cost band of €10m to €20m. This allocation will directly unlock lands for 600 residential units and indirectly unlock 1,400 further units at Colbert Quarter / St. Joseph's in Limerick City.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran commented: "This funding is a significant vote of confidence in Limerick's ambition and our ability to deliver housing. Since becoming Mayor, I have made it my priority to work closely with Government to ensure Limerick secures the investment needed to unlock new homes at scale. While that work continues, these important projects that have now been unlocked will remove key infrastructure barriers and create the conditions for development of thousands of homes for people in Limerick. I welcome the Government's support and look forward to continuing our strong engagement to accelerate housing delivery and meet the needs of our growing population in Limerick."
Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery said: "This funding is great news for Limerick as it moves us closer to delivering thousands of much-needed homes for families in strategic, well-serviced locations. The investment will help unlock key sites, improve supporting infrastructure and create the conditions needed for long-term housing growth."
Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly added: "This is a very welcome injection of funding into Limerick, providing the catalyst needed to push on with delivering thousands of homes across the city and county. These projects will support the creation of new communities while helping us meet housing demand and delivering sustainable and well-connected neighbourhoods. We look forward to working with our partners and Government to maximise the impact of this investment for the people of Limerick."
