US Pharmaceutical Giant To Build New Plant In Ireland

One of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world is to build a new €200 million plant in Ireland, it has been announced.

New Jersey-based Merck & Co is to use the plant to develop and manufacture human vaccines.

The 65-acre site in the town of Carlow will create 170 new jobs.

The move has been backed by the Industrial Development Authority (IDA) Ireland, and the site will be built at the IDA Business and Technology Park, which the company has purchased.

"The global competition for this investment has been intense, and the decision to locate it in Ireland follows an international site selection study by Merck," said Ireland's Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Micheál Martin

Construction work on the new plant is scheduled to begin next year.

The company also has a production facility in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, and is currently building a €100m research and manufacturing facility at the site.

Merck & Co also has a sales and marketing unit based in Dublin.
