The contentious Maze stadium project is back on the Northern Ireland government's agenda today, as Sinn Fein and DUP Executive ministers meet for renewed talks at Stormont.

Discussions are expected to last most of the day, and will reportedly cover other matters that have brought the devolved government to a virtual stalemate.

Despite an anticipated announcement from Sports Minister Gregory Campbell, on the future of the Long Kesh site, later this months, media reports have indicated the decision has already been reached, by the two largest parties – Sinn Fein and the DUP, to ditch the stadium plans, and instead transform the area into a housing and leisure development.

It is believed these murmurs, which include the creation of a conflict resolution centre, have led to a split in DUP ranks.

Today's talks are being held ahead of next Thursday's first full Executive meeting since the summer recess.

First Minister Peter Robinson has warned of "serious consequences for the good governance of Northern Ireland" if the Executive meeting does not take place.

However, Sinn Fein has dispelled the need for any Executive meetings until key issues such as the devolution of policing and justice powers are outlined.
