Work on two new greenway projects is to get underway later this year after receiving over £950,000 in funding.
The Department of Communities (DfC) awarded £658,000 and Derry and Strabane District Council is investing £293,000 to extend the Ebrington Greenway and Clooney Greenway.
The Ebrington Greenway project will link the new Multi Modal Transport Hub to the existing Waterside Greenway network while the Clooney Greenway will connect communities in the Waterside area.
Damian Mulholland, Director of the DfC's North West Development Office: "The Department's investment in these two Greenways will significantly enhance the Greenway Network creating a safe and accessible route for cyclists and pedestrians to enjoy. I am delighted the Department has been able to provide funding to enhance the already impressive Greenway Network, transform derelict lands and connect communities.”
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Maoliosa McHugh said: "This is another example of successful partnership working between the Department and Council to create enhanced greenway provision in the Waterside and provide enhanced accessibility, and additional walking and cycling opportunities for the entire community across the City and District. This is very positive news and is in keeping with the Council’s objectives set out in its Strategic Growth Plan to invest in greenways and to provide facilities to connect communities and improve the local environment in terms of health and well-being."
The work on both projects is expected to be completed in 2019.
