Gorey Water Mains Upgrade To Strengthen Supply And Drive Local Growth

Construction News Image

Uisce Éireann is beginning works to replace ageing and damaged water mains in Gorey, Co Wexford, as part of its commitment to providing a dependable water supply for the community.

Crews will install 3.4 kilometres of modern piping to reinforce the network, reduce disruption for homes and businesses, and create capacity for future development in the area.

The existing pipes have been susceptible to bursts and leaks, causing interruptions to service and the loss of treated drinking water.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD welcomed the works, saying: "These water mains upgrades will have a really positive impact on Gorey. The replacement of the water pipes will reduce disruption to homes and businesses and ensure a reliable water supply for the area. It will also help to support local development and growth, by putting in place the right infrastructure for Gorey as a place to live and work. I commend Uisce Eireann on the rollout of these upgrades work and the progress being made on leakage reduction locally in Wexford and right around the country."

Welcoming the project, Dave Murphy of Uisce Éireann said the upgrades will curb leakage, give the community greater confidence in its water supply and underpin long-term growth and development.

"Every pipe we replace is guided by one clear goal: providing a water supply people can count on. These improvements make a difference every single day, in every tap, home and throughout the community. By focusing on delivering a more reliable supply, we're helping to build a stronger, more resilient water service for the people of Gorey, now and for generations to come."

The programme, which began in May, will be delivered in phases to minimise disruption. Phase 1 is at Ballyminaun Hill; Phase 2 will proceed along the R741, adjacent to the Amber Springs Hotel. Phase 3 will take place along Hollyfort Road, Pearsons Brook Road and Woodbury Road towards the junction with the R725, and Phase 4 will be carried out at Creagh Water Treatment Plant.

Works include installing new individual service connections from the public main in the roadway to customers' property boundaries and linking them to the supply.

Shareridge Ltd is delivering the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected by the end of 2026.

This scheme forms part of Uisce Éireann's ongoing efforts to reduce leakage across more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationwide. Many leaks are hidden and complex to find, but progress continues: national leakage has fallen from 49% in 2014 to 36% today. Further details are available on the National Leakage Reduction Programme page.
