Cork County Council has announced the successful completion of Phase 1 of the Town Walls of County Cork GIS Project, an initiative led by County Archaeologist Annette Quinn in partnership with Archaeological Management Solutions (AMS). The project uses Geographical Information Systems to document, map and promote the county's historic urban defences.
This first phase concentrated on the town walls of Youghal and Bandon, producing detailed GIS mapping and a consolidated digital archive. Drawing on historic cartography, documentary sources, published research and archaeological excavation reports, the team created a comprehensive database now integrated into the Council's mapping portals.
The digital record captures surviving wall sections, towers, gateways and archaeological investigations, providing a key resource for heritage management, research and public engagement. To mark the milestone, Annette Quinn, supported by the Historic Monuments Advisory Committee and the Heritage Unit, led a guided tour of the Youghal Town Wall, giving participants the chance to explore one of Ireland's most significant surviving town walls.
Mayor of the County of Cork, Councillor Mary Linehan Foley, said: "The Town Walls of County Cork GIS Project is an example of how modern technology can help us understand, protect and celebrate our rich heritage. This innovative project not only improves our understanding of these important monuments but also makes that knowledge more accessible to local communities, researchers and visitors. I congratulate everyone involved in delivering this important initiative."
Chairperson of the Historic Monuments Advisory Committee, Cllr. Alan Coleman added, "Our historic town walls tell the story of the development of Cork's towns over many centuries. This project will help ensure they are better understood, protected and enjoyed by future generations."
Building on Phase 1, work is now under way to progress Phase 2, which will focus on the town walls of Kinsale and Buttevant.
