Clare County Council has submitted the initial Kilrush to Kilkee stretch of the West Clare Railway Greenway for development consent, marking a significant milestone and initiating land acquisition for the route.
The scheme proposes to follow, where feasible, the alignment of the former West Clare Railway, creating a safe, appealing and accessible path for local residents and visitors alike.
As part of the planning process, the Council has begun steps to acquire the lands needed for the Kilrush to Kilkee section. This submission follows five years of preparatory work involving engagement with landowners, farming representatives and the wider community.
All affected landowners were consulted prior to the publication of statutory notices. The Council will continue the 'Voluntary Land Acquisition Process', including farm accommodation works, in parallel with the statutory procedures outlined in the 'Code of Best Practice for National and Regional Greenways'.
Designed to be inclusive for pedestrians, cyclists and people with impaired mobility, the greenway aims to encourage active travel and strengthen connections between workplaces, education centres and leisure destinations, while supporting recreation and tourism.
Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Service for Housing with Clare County Council, Alan Farrell, thanked landowners, representative bodies, stakeholders and members of the public for their continued support and collaboration, noting the delivery team’s close engagement with all parties and the Council's commitment to addressing concerns as the project moves forward.
"The provision of a greenway in this location will enhance access to the wider West Clare region while highlighting the importance of sustainable tourism, active travel, built heritage and the natural environment. Experience elsewhere in Ireland has shown that greenways can also act as powerful economic drivers, supporting sustainable tourism, creating local employment and helping to revitalise rural economies. By attracting both domestic and international visitors, they generate ongoing revenue for local hospitality and recreation businesses while supporting long-term community health and development. This project also provides an opportunity to promote the historical and educational significance of the former West Clare Railway and to showcase the scenic character of the surrounding area."
