Uisce Éireann has begun a targeted upgrade of local water infrastructure in Sutton, aiming to deliver a more reliable supply and cut water loss by tackling leaks.

The programme includes replacing ageing backyard mains and installing almost 250 metres of new modern pipes along Station Road, Burrow, to strengthen network performance and reduce the risk of bursts and outages.

Backyard service replacements form a key part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme. By decommissioning old, shared backyard services and fitting durable new mains, a major source of hidden leakage is removed. This keeps more water in the system, improves pressure for customers and reduces wastage of treated drinking water.

In many older areas, water connections were historically run to the rear of properties and shared between households. Often made of iron or lead, these services have deteriorated, making them prone to leaks, bursts and low pressure. Because they traverse multiple gardens, they are difficult to access and repair, and it is not possible to switch off one home without affecting others. Replacing these arrangements with individual connections at the front of each property provides a safer, more dependable supply for every household.

Crews will work on a house‑by‑house basis, coordinating with customers to install new connections with minimal disruption. The works, being delivered on behalf of Uisce Éireann by GMC Utilities Group, are expected to finish by the end of September, with permanent reinstatement to follow later in the year. To protect the public and crews, a traffic management system will be in place, though local and emergency access will be maintained, and every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum.
