Uisce Éireann is set to begin replacing ageing and damaged water mains to improve supply security for customers between Innishannon and Ballinhassig. The scheme will run along the N71 from Innishannon Water Treatment Plant to Ballinhassig village, with additional works on the L2231, R589, L2036 and L2037.
Crews will install 10 kilometres of modern water mains, strengthening the local network and helping to cut the frequency of bursts and leaks that have caused service interruptions and wasted treated drinking water.
Welcoming the project, Jack Cronin, Programme Manager, Uisce Éireann, said the upgrades will curb leakage and give residents and businesses greater confidence in their supply. "Every pipe we replace is guided by one clear goal: providing a water supply people can count on. These improvements make a difference every single day, in every tap and home throughout the community. By focusing on delivering a more reliable supply, we're helping to build a stronger, more resilient water service for the people of Innishannon and Ballinhassig, now and for generations to come."
Work is expected to start next week and will include installing new customer service connections from the public main in the roadway to property boundaries and linking them to the customers' supply.
The project is being delivered by Ward and Burke on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion targeted for July 2027. Customers with queries can call Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 or check the Water Supply Updates section on the company's website for regular updates.
Measures will be in place to minimise disruption. Two-way traffic will be maintained on the N71, while localised road closures and traffic management will be introduced on other routes as works progress. Local and emergency access will be preserved.
This investment forms part of ongoing national efforts to reduce leakage across Ireland's 65,000 km water network. While many leaks are difficult to detect, national leakage has fallen to its lowest level on record, down from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.
