Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has confirmed a £680,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on the A1002 Strand Road in L'Derry City will get under way on Monday 16 February 2026.
The project will fully resurface 750 metres of the four-lane route between Queens Quay Roundabout and Meadowbank Avenue. It also includes structural patching at specific locations and resurfacing of sections of the adjoining footway network. Works will start with footway repairs before moving to on-carriageway phases.
Minister Liz Kimmins said: "This is a substantial investment for Derry City which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to investing in and improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
The first phase will involve moving lane closures along the length of the scheme. To deliver the works safely, daily lane closures will operate Monday to Friday between 9.30am and 4.30pm from 16 February. A full road closure will be required for the resurfacing element, with further details to be published as the works progress.
The Department has planned operations and traffic management to minimise disruption. While local access will be accommodated, motorists should expect some delays, allow extra time for journeys and comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.
Subject to favourable weather, the scheme is expected to be substantially complete by the end of April 2026.
