EirGrid, the developer and operator of the national electricity grid, has announced a significant update regarding the Fingal to East Meath Grid Reinforcement Project. The initiative aims to modernize energy infrastructure in one of Ireland's most rapidly expanding regions.
The project centres on the construction of the new Ward 400 kV Substation situated to the west of Swords. This facility will serve as a transmission interface, connecting to an existing substation in East Meath to ensure the efficient distribution of power to residential, educational, and commercial properties across North County Dublin and East Meath.
Following a five-week public consultation held in late 2024, EirGrid evaluated several potential locations based on technical, economic, environmental, and community feedback. After a comprehensive Multi-Criteria Assessment process and detailed site investigations, Site E within "Zone 1" has been identified as the best-performing option for the new substation.
Siobhán O'Shea, EirGrid's Chief Infrastructure Officer, commented on the milestone: "With demand for electricity growing in this area, this project is critical in ensuring we can continue to provide a reliable energy supply to homes, schools and businesses in the region. At EirGrid, we recognise how important local insight and feedback is when it comes to planning out infrastructure projects, so I would like to thank everyone who has engaged with us so far on plans for the Fingal to East Meath Grid Reinforcement Project. I would encourage anyone who wants to find out more about the latest development in this project to attend our online webinar or one of the public information events."
The project will now move into the next phase, which includes the design of future connecting circuits and identifying potential route corridors. EirGrid has committed to ongoing engagement with local stakeholders and is inviting interested parties to join a community forum to provide further input.
Public information events and an online webinar are being scheduled to allow the community to review the plans in detail. For further information or to register interest in the community forum, residents and business owners can visit www.eirgrid.ie/fingaleastmeath.
