NI Water will soon begin works in the Henry Street area of Ballymoney to bolster the resilience of the local wastewater network and reduce the likelihood of out-of-sewer flooding during periods of heavy rain.
The project will deliver dedicated stormwater infrastructure as part of NI Water's stormwater separation programme, which removes rainfall from combined sewers that carry both wastewater and surface water. Channeling rainwater into a separate system increases capacity in the sewer network and eases demand on wastewater treatment works.
Around 190 metres of new stormwater pipe and seven manholes will be installed. Work is due to start at the junction of Union Street and Meeting House Street on Monday 26 October, before progressing along Ozone Avenue and Henry Street to No. 3 Henry Street over approximately eight weeks.
To protect the public and the construction team, a rolling one-way closure will be in place in each active work area as pipe-laying advances. Access for residents and businesses will be maintained via a one-way system throughout the scheme.
Robert McLean, NI Water Senior Project Manager, said: "The work in Ballymoney forms part of a wider NI Water investment to modernise wastewater infrastructure in areas facing network constraints, creating additional capacity to support sustainable development while improving resilience for local communities during periods of heavy rainfall.
"Our contractor, Civco, will strive to minimise disruption and complete the work in the shortest possible timeframe. NI Water and our project team from AtkinsRéalis and CivCo thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience and cooperation while we complete these essential improvements."
